Mother dairy distributor in Lucknow: Soon, you could be spoilt for choice when it comes to packaged milk available in the market as Delhi-based cooperative giant Mother Diary is all set to enter UP market in a big way. The cooperative with formidable presence in Delhi and the NCR is expected to start sale of milk in central and eastern UP soon. To start with UP operations would be in collaboration with local brand Parag. Confirming this, Harsharan Das, managing director, department of dairy development, said, "The state government has entered into a memorandum of understanding to this effect." UP's Parag and Gujarat's Amul are two major player in this market. As per the MoU, Mother Dairy would be procuring milk from cooperatives on its own. But it will process and package the products in Parag's Kanpur based plant. As far as gains are concerned, Parag will get Rs 2.10 per packet of milk sold and Mother Dairy is in fact looking forward to create a new market. The new entrant would begin with milk but would slowly add regular products like curd, flavored milk, shrikhand and so on. Mother dairy was already supplying ice-cream in UP and was procuring milk from dairies in Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut in the state. However, it was supplying milk and other products in Noida and Agra. On when exactly, will the cooperative start marketing of its products, managing director, mother dairy, "we are trying our best to start things soon. But this depends on the plant getting functional. A new player in the UP market would intensify Parag's survival challenge. And the cooperative is struggling hard to survive. Insiders say that Parag is dying a slow death only because of pending dues, burden of losses and innumerable administrative issues. In the past one decade, seven units in western UP have closed down while a number of them are on the verge of closure. Figures show that Parag's milk procurement has also dropped in the last few months. Parag is in shambles despite the state being country's biggest milk producer with dairy farmers churning out more than 565 lakh liters of milk every day. This means that in a year, more than two crore tones of milk is produced in UP. But Parag procures less than one percent of the total milk produced. Das said that he was aware of the situation and the tie-up with Mother Dairy was an effort to revive dairy industry in Kanpur. "The plant in Kanpur was lying unutilized. Though this link up we have tried to enhance its capacity," he said informing that mother dairy has already invested more than Rs 70 lakh to upgrade the plant. Experts say that coming of a third cooperative would not eat up Parag's business initially. It will rather create a new market for them as the untapped potential is immense. The MD also agrees to this but continues to believe that Parag would continue to be the market leader. "Our USP is cost and we would continue to maintain it because we operate from here," he said adding that the new entrant will not disturb dedicated Parag dealers as per the deal.
